Deposition of atmospheric particles on almond tree leaves (Terminalia catappa) as bioindicators of air Quality in the Urban Area of Pichanaqui, Peru

Pichanaqui is a city located in the central jungle, currently experiencing economic development and population growth, whose effects on air quality are still unknown. This study analyzes, for the first time, the deposition of atmospheric particles on the leaves of Terminalia catappa as bioindicators of air quality in this urban area. Four sampling points (P1, P2, P3, and P4) were established in streets with different sources of atmospheric particle emissions. At each point, leaves of T. catappa were collected, and the percentage of particle deposition on the leaves was quantified. The results indicate a significantly higher deposition at P3 (80.3±0.1%, p<0.001), an area with greater vehicle traffic and commercial activity, suggesting the potential use of T. catappa as bioindicators of air quality. This study provides a scientific basis for developing strategies for monitoring and controlling air pollution in the jungle.
